Several things you need to know before server maintenance

Server maintenance is something that needs to be done regularly to improve performance and also protect important data from damage or virus attacks such as ransomware. Server maintenance is often considered unimportant, even though server maintenance has very important benefits. But before we do server maintenance, there are several things you need to know before doing server maintenance.

Data Servers

1. Server Backup Daily/Weekly

We also need to backup the server as a whole, to avoid the threat of viruses and system crashes, if someone uses a virtualized server, for example using Vmware, Hyper-V and others, we have to create a snapshoot scheduler to backup the entire server starting from database, disk, system, software will all be backed up on 1 server.

2. Database Backup Daily

For those who use Autobackup & Autodelete Tasks on their servers, we often forget to check whether the database has been saved or not, therefore we need to check and re-check every day or every week the condition of the backup file, afraid that on the day Certain there are some databases that are not saved

3. Storage Usage

And of course, autobackup storage will take up quite a lot of storage if you don't move the backup results to an external disk, the storage capacity will be full. To prevent this, you can move the backup results to an external disk, for example using a NAS, external hard disk, other external disk so that it doesn't pile up. File System C:

4. Sharing Folders

Sometimes we share folders on the server to share several folders with users who need them, for example, when user A wants to open folder A, that user can only access folder A, other users cannot open folder A because to avoid missing data from irresponsible users, and the need to encrypt several important folders that are shared so that no user can enter.

Software & Systems

1. Server Resource Usage

Apart from reviewing storage, it is also necessary to monitor the use of other servers. Memory and processor usage can indicate how heavily the server is being used. If CPU and memory usage frequently approaches 100%, it's a sign that the server may be overloaded. Consider reducing server load, or by adding additional servers. Other options include reassigning certain workloads to a cloud environment, thereby implementing a hybrid cloud solution.

2. Network Utilization

Just like memory and CPU usage, server load has network capacity. may consider using a network monitoring tool. These tools can monitor network traffic for unusual or problematic usage. For example, MRTG, PRTG, or you can also use routers such as Mikrotik, Fortiget for security and others.

3. Update System Operation

Why do you need to update the OS, because every update has several security features to secure the server, for example, with Windows updates, there will always be updates, maybe every month or every year, which add security update features, and on Linux we also need to update The OS is safer and newest.

Security & Monitoring

1.   Firewall

On the Firewall server, this needs to be turned on in order to strengthen server security, such as the default application from Windows, namely Windows Firewall Advance Security, there you can see that there is a Domain Profile, Private Profile, Public Profile that we need to use as the inbound & outbound ports that we will use.

2.   Manage Port

The default Remote Desktop port is 3389, so if we use a remote remote server using Remote Desktop of course we will use that port for the protocol, for server security we also need to replace the port with a random port to avoid brute force.

3.   Change Password

We need to know that the passwords for users are sometimes different, for example, if one user resigns, we need to change that user's password so that the user can no longer use it.

4.   User Access and Privileges

Only give user access & privileges to users who need them, don't give users admin access rights other than the server/IT admin.

5.   Remote Access Server

Just like point number 2, we need to change the port on the remote server, but on this remote access server we have to limit users who only use the application as needed, for example using TS Plus, Citrix software so users can only remotely access the software. just not with a full desktop.

The things above are things that need to be considered for server maintenance from the data server, software and system side, to the security and monitoring side so that during server maintenance it can run well. If your company wants to know more, you can contact us 'CLICK HERE'.
